Dragon & Dracula: Android App Review

When developer HeroCraft releases a new app for Android, we tend to listen: And we also tend to buy! This is because they have consistently been pumping out quality applications for so long now that we automatically assume each new app they release will be a winner. And with one of their latest numbers, Dragon & Dracula, our assumptions were spot-on. The app offers a unique mix of platforming and fluid roleplaying, allowing you to enjoy the levels while watching your character grow simultaneously. It’s an engaging mix, and if you’re ready to check out our full review, you need only to slide on down below the break.

Concept and Gameplay

Dragon & Dracula

Before we go any further, we simply want to point out that Dragon & Dracula is a platforming arcade game in the truest sense, and we could not be more happy about it. We love these old school style arcade games, and the action that’s presented here in this app hits our funny bone just right. As a player, you’ll be directing a small dragon around the levels. You’ll be doing usual platforming things like jumping over gaps, up escapes, avoiding or blasting enemies, and of course, collecting various items. However, unlike a lot of platforming games, these items are very important. You see, your character starts out very small, and only over time does it grow—and the way in which it grows is bloody cool.

As you complete levels, you’ll gain small items that change your character in specific ways. These might add a new powerup, or they might just supply you with a new dragon wardrobe. Either way, it’s up to you to find all of these items, to complete the levels in which they are contained, and to progress through your wee dragon life. It’s a unique concept, and one we simply cannot get enough of.

Design and Graphics

Best of all, Dragon & Dracula looks pretty great on the Android platform to boot! It’s got a unique art style that reminded us a lot of ye olden arcade games. The controls use a joystick that’s rather smooth, if a bit clunky at times. Aside from that, simple buttons along the right most side control your attacks and powerups. It’s a simple layout offset by a gorgeous set of artwork. And with a multitude of challenging levels and the sort of depth we’ve come to expect from HeroCraft, we’re more than prepared to call Dragon & Dracula a tidy package.

Overall Value

And at only $0.99 in the Android Market, you won’t pay much to play around with Dragon & Dracula either. The game is slick, looks great, and comes with more than enough fluid depth to keep you entertained for quite some time to come. As such, it’s an easy recommendation for Dragon & Dracula from us here at Android Apps Review. If you’re looking for a new platformer to poke around with, this is the one to have.
