Mental Math: Written Android App Review

Here at Android Apps Review, there’s hardly anything on this planet that we like more than a good puzzle game. We like any app that can test our mental mettle to the max, or get us just slightly outside our own comfort zones. We’re also quite fond of arcade games, too, which means we’re absolutely bonkers for Mental Math, by developer Intergraphics. The app delivers a puzzling experience that’s one part Tetras and one part primary school homework—but it’s all fun! For our full review, one needs only to jump no down below the break.

Concept and Gameplay

Mental Math for Android

As stated, Mental Math is a weird sort of hybrid between a traditional puzzling game (like Tetris) and your old homework. The app drops unsolved equations from the ceiling, which you must quickly solve by typing in the correct answer using the number pad along the bottom. A completed equation that’s been solved correctly will disappear. Those that aren’t quite as functionally finished will rest along the bottom, clogging up the works. This continues in a very classical sort of way until the whole game board is useless thanks to the accumulation of debris, or until the player has become so good at the game that he gives up. Along the way, Mental Math gathers information about high scores, etc. allowing for an healthy amount of arcade obsession, which we’ve been known to indulge in quite a lot.

The game also comes with a total of 9 unique levels and 9 unique speeds, which means just as you’re getting pretty good at Mental Math, the game is ready to whallop you upside the head again. We liked this a lot, and it does a whole heaping bunch to keep the gameplay fresh and entertaining.

Design and Graphics

Our only real complaint with the app involves its aesthetics: it’s simply not the best looking application that we’ve ever seen. Everything behaves well enough, and we had no problem playing the game itself. Still, we feel the game board and interface itself could easily do with a reworking to be more like Bejeweled, rather than a rougher edition of a study utility. Still, we liked the way the game plays, and we had no problem controlling the action. And as stated, the various difficulty modes are very much appreciated, and go a long way toward solidifying the app’s position on our phone.

Overall Value

And at only two bucks in the Android Market, you’re certainly going to get your money’s wroth out of Mental Math. The app is fun to play, cheap enough at the front-end, and very engaging the further along you get into it. As such, we can’t help but recommend it to those that want a new puzzle challenge, or are looking for a unique arcade title to keep them busy.
