Wordistic: Written and Video Android App Review

It seems like people are always asking us the same question: “What games do you recommend for the Android platform?” Invariably, our personal interests show through in our answer. You see, we’re most tickled pink by those games that give us some kind of arcade goal, but also let us express our inner word freak. We love any title that has us slamming letters together to produce a whole product, and if we can do it to a timer, all the better! As such, we’re more than happy to introduce you now to Wordistic, by developer MushDevStudio. The app is a solid concept wrapped in a stunning husk, and if you’re looking for our full review, you’ll find it below!

Concept and Gameplay

Wordisitc for Android

We don’t get to say this often, so we’re going to do it with particular relish: Wordistic offers one of the most original and wholly engaging word-gaming concepts we’ve seen in a long time. Here’s, more or less, how it works.

Letters fall from the top of the screen and slowly approach the bottom. As they fall, the player must tap them out in the correct order to spell words. Spelling out a word adds more time to the clock, which is what prevents the player from playing endlessly until they reach the level’s score limitation. If your timer runs out, you’ve failed the level. If you’re lucky enough to get the required amount of points, you’re moved onto the next level. It’s a brilliant thought, and the inclusion of various time modification and word powerups makes it all the better.

On the main screen there is a seed number - this number changes every 6 minutes so that several players on different iOS devices can play the same game at the same time. You can also click on this number and enter your desired number to play favorite game or to get synchronized game with other players in diff time zones.

If whilst playing you click pause and then click on the magnifying glass - the app will do an online definition look up of the words as you enter them (this can be toggled off and on).

Underneath the letters you have entered so far are some smaller letters that suggest words for you to make based on the letters you have entered so far (this is another option that can be toggled off or on withing the pause menu by clicking the “i” icon).

If you click on these letters (or letters made so far) it will suggest a different word that you can make.
The sound track is completely original and was composed by artist Atlas.

If you enable Facebook you can post screenshots at various screens within the game. The app keeps statistics on all words played and these statistics can be accessed on the main game menu (the book icon).

And as each level ups the speed and difficulty, the game only improves by playing it. After all, that’s what every arcade game should do, right?

Graphics and Design

In fact, our only real niggle with Wordistic is in its looks. The app simply isn’t the greatest looking application we’ve ever seen, but then again, it easily isn’t the worst. The letters look good, and we found the controls to be entirely responsive. At the end of the day, we feel it just needs a bit of tweaking to iron out some of the rough corners. We also feel like some additional powerups would go a long way toward fleshing out the already incredible gameplay.

Overall Value

In other news, we are happy this app is 99 cents. We’re more than willing to pay two dollars for an app that’s this good, but love the fact that it’s at the standard dollar-per-app price. Surely you’re going to get your money’s worth with this one, as it has a ton of commute killing potential. So if you’re looking for a new word game or arcade game to consumer your time, we really have no better suggestion than Wordistic. It’s a solid concept that’s loads of fun to play—do you really need any other recommendation?
