LearningKids: Written Android App Review
One of the areas we like most when it comes to application development is that of the educational application aimed at children. We think it’s above and beyond one of the coolest fields to be in, but sadly, we just don’t see too many of these kinds of apps on the Android Market. Thankfully though, developers like Learning Kids are pumping out quality applications like LearningKids: The Animals, allowing our Android-toting children to learn the basics of life, and to benefit from all these gadgets we carry around. For our full review of this great children’s educational tool, check below beyond the break!
Concept and Functionally
LearningKids for Android
As stated, LearningKids fits very squarely into the realm of children’s educational application. However, rather than teaching your children how to read, or something of the sort, the app instead tries to teach them basic pattern recognition skills, logical cognitive processing, and plain old barnyard animal fun. It’s a great mix, and the way that the app is presented is what makes it a rare find. To begin with, the app presents your children with a number of farm animals. By clicking on the animal, the narrator says what the animal is, and the animal makes a noise. This allows your child to become acquainted with the creature at hand, as well as to have a little fun.
The second portion of the app is based around a set of various puzzles. These puzzles range from as simple as dragging and dropping the shape of an animal into the right silhouette, or as complicated as answering a trivia question about the creatures. It’s a great mix, and it does quite a bit to encourage your child’s learning ability from the ground up.
Design and Graphics
For the most part, the app looks aright on the Android platform, too. It’s got its rough edges, though, and we’re hopeful that future updates will iron out some of the kinks. For instance, the app doesn’t come with real narration, but rather a computer read out. This detracts quite a bit from the language learning side of the app, though it does allow LearningKids to arrive in multiple languages (Merci!). That being said, we also think the animal drawings could use a little bit more texture, and perhaps a little less of the current “polished” look. Minor complaints, though.
Overall Value
And at the end of the day, LearningKids is certainly a value for the money. At only $1.60 in the Google Play Store, you’re going to get a lot of fun, educational potential out of the app, and we guarantee that your child will enjoy it quite a bit. As such, we can’t help but give LearningKids a solid rating, as well as our recommendation for those in need of a solid Android educational app.
