We like new and inventive games for the Android platform. That is to say, we like anything that can present us with a new package, a unique twist, or some reason to keep using our phones in inventive ways. This is why we’re brining you a full review of Action! Video Charades today by developer Showbucks. Concept and Functionality

Action! for Android

If you couldn’t tell by the title of the app, Action! is largely based around the concept of charades. Now, we know what you’re thinking: That’s hardly inventive, now is it? And on the whole, you’d be right! However, that might only be the case if Action! weren’t on your phone—which it totally is.

In essence, the app allows you to snap a Vine-Sequa video of yourself, upload it to their servers thanks to your favorite social media network (we only saw Facebook, however) and play charades with either strangers or buddies. You provide the answer, they hear the clue, they type in the results, and the game progresses. In a way, it’s closer to those video messaging services that we’ve seen blossoming recently on both iPhone and Android: At least in the sense that you’ll be sending a whole lot of short film snapshots to play the game.

Either way, it’s a quick, fun and rather entertaining way to play a game that’s otherwise reserved for large party groups. And as stated, you can play with your friends, if you’d rather avoid strangers and the public game wall.

Design and Graphics

On the whole, we also liked the way that Action! presents itself. However, we do have some complaints. Firts off, the clue/response menu is rather terrible. We don’t like having to scroll sideways to see the whole letter list, nor do we like not being able to drag our letters into place. Aside from this, and a few other niggles, we did like the presentation, though. We liked the inclusion of various powerup items that help you get out of a bind due to bad acting. We also liked how well Action! ties directly into our Facebook. On the other hand, we’re confused: Why has sound been included in a charades-based game?

Overall Value

No matter how you slice it, though, Action! is a solid bargain. It costs nothing in the Google Play Store, and will continue to cost nothing for you to enjoy. This means no matter if you’ve got a serious thing for charades, or just want to have some fun with friends, you’re ready to roll in only minutes. It’s a fun concept, the one Action! is sporting, which makes it easy enough or recommend.
