Words Builder HD: Written Android Game Review
Word games are a great way to keep your mind sharp while expanding your vocabulary. There’s no shortage of them in the Google Play store, which is why it’s important for developers of new games to do their best to separate their creation from the rest.
Words Builder HD, developed by Vadym Khokhlov, is a new word game for Android that’s designed to test both knowledge and skill. Can you quickly swipe and swap your way to the top?
Concept and Gameplay:
Words Builder HD is a unique game with a few different concepts. Basically the goal of the game is to earn the highest score possible by creating words through swapping letters around the board (similar to Bejeweled Blitz). There are two different play styles you can use, from the aforementioned word swap to simply creating words by tapping adjacent letters (like Boggle). Each letter has a point value, similar to Scrabble, Words with Friends, and other similar games.
Though there’s a very detailed help guide, I found the game to be fairly confusing at the start. If you play the game in swap mode, you’re limited to three letter swaps before you must make a word. However, if you play the game without swapping letters, all you have to do is tap or drag your fingers over letters to make a word. Be careful how long you take to make words, though, because you only have three minutes to complete each round.
As far as the ads in Words Builder HD, the developer states that they’ll go away if you click on them and will stay hidden for the rest of the game. However, the ads will reappear when you close and reopen the app. While it’s handy to allow users to hide ads if they click on them, I feel like tricking players into viewing ads so they go away (earning the developer money every time) is a bit dishonest. This is strictly personal opinion, though, but I’d rather see an option to disable ads through a paid version of the app.

Though Words Builder HD seems simple to play, there are a few features worth mentioning which enhance gameplay. For one, you can actually add time to your round by submitting correct words. One neat thing is that the longer the word is that you submit, the more time you can put back on the clock.
Also, Words Builder HD uses SOWPODS, which is the official list of acceptable words in Scrabble tournaments. I found it interesting that this is mentioned on the game’s Google Play description, mainly because I’ve never heard of this word list before (and I tend to play A LOT of word games). Lastly, you can keep track of game scores via Scoreloop, which is an independent leaderboard service. While this is great for social gamers who like to pit themselves against the rest of the world, I think this is a disadvantage to those who are concerned about privacy and would rather keep their scores local to their device.
Value:
Words Builder HD is available for free in the Google Play store, which is always an excellent deal. Though the game is fun to play once you get the hang of it, I’m not a huge fan of the ads or score system. Also, there’s a non-HD version of Words Builder available.
