Over the years, we’ve seen more than our fair share of note-taking applications. In fact, considering we started doing this back in college when such things were just becoming acceptable (Down with paper!) we like to think ourselves connoisseurs of the genre. With that in mind, may we present a new entry into the field titled Handy Note Free, from AppBody (HK) Information Technology Co., Limited. It comes chockfull of features, as well as a few good reasons to give it a go—not least of all its price tag. Concept and Functionality
Handy Note Free for Android
Handy Note Free is a bit of an oddity in the way that it presents itself. You see, a lot of note apps try to take the take of being a digital Moleskine. They present a more or less traditional translation of that experience, only with some marked digital improvements.
However, Handy Note Free isn’t having any of it. The app has gone for the gusto and decided to shove in as many new and digitally-oriented options as it possibly can. Obviously, this means the app will appeal to a specific set of users. However, if you’re all about doing it up right, here’s what you’ll get:
The app comes loaded with your notebooks, which can be customized using a number of field-ready templates (we really enjoyed this feature). From there, you can do your usual scribbling and text adding, as well as use the magic pen tool to highlight or draw. Want to add some widgets, like your most recent texts in there? With Handy Note Free, you can actually do that. You can also add in a time stamp, photos, videos, tags, and a whole host of other things. Once you have it the way you like it, you can lock it down, too, with some handy password protection. The app also comes with a neat quick view option that puts all your notes right there for easy glancing.
Design and Interface
Honestly, we could keep going forever. Handy Note Free truly is full of options and functions, which is one reason why it’s successful. It’s also one of the biggest reasons why we might not pick it over other note taking titles. We wouldn’t necessarily say it’s cluttered, but rather that the whole feels a bit unfocused. It’s not quite as refined as we might hope. Additionally, you’ll not find an export to PDF here, which would certainly bother our old college day workflow, where we dumped copious PDFs to Evernote.
Overall Value
At the end of the day, though, it’s incredibly hard to argue with an app that’s free. If you’re looking for a new note taking app, and one that might cover all of your bases in one go, you’ll hardly go wrong with Handy Note Free, as well. With that in mind, it still earns our recommendation. And as future updates bring along more improvements, we can only expect Handy Note Free to shine all the brighter.
