Since the Android platform first hit the big time (an epoch that is rapidly becoming much further back than any of us would readily attest to) there have been many more launcher replacements floating across our desk than we rightly know what to do with. However, out of this we’ve developed quite a knack for knowing exactly which will get the job done, and even which ones will be a lasting favorite on your device for many years to come. With that in mind, may we kindly introduce you to upstart Free Mobile Desktop, from Macrobile. It packs a lot of wallop, and though it yet has room to grow, it’s quite the pony to watch for. Concept and Functionality
If you’re unfamiliar with the concept of a launcher replacement, let us fill you in on the details: Essentially, these apps intend to beef up or improve that most crucial part of your Android phone—the bit at the front that lets you click on apps, add widgets, and generally use the heck out of the platform.
Free Mobile Desktop puts on its brave shoes and walks in the wake of such greats as GoLauncher. It offers all that you’d expect, too: You’ll get custom themes (of which there are more than a pleasing amount) as well as new animations to speed things along. You can easily customize your homescreens thanks to the app’s included widgets and touch-based controls. The widgets here are nothing inventive, but that’s hardly bad. They’re streamlined, slick and to the point. We appreciated this immensely, and overall, we found the app’s implementation to be superbly well thought-out.
Design and Interface
Here’s where we start talking dirty! We liked what Free Mobile Desktop has to offer, but it’s hardly anything wholly new. At least what we’ve mentioned thus far. So what’s it secretly packing? To put it short, a nifty thing called gestures. Using this, you can easily perform a wide variety of simple tasks with nothing shorter than a finger flick. Likewise, what the app lacks in brand name appeal, it makes up for in sheer quality. The themes are phenomenal, the widgets impressive, and the overall usability right up there with those against which it competes. Sadly, the app hans’t been in practice quite as long, and isn’t as refined. But with time, that too shall be sorted out.
Overall Value
Did we mention that Free Mobile Desktop is also free? If you couldn’t tell from the name, the app won’t cost you a dern thing. With that in mind, if you’re looking for a new launcher to play around with, there’s no harm in giving Free Mobile Desktop a test drive. If you like it, keep it around! It will only refine its golden features as more updates roll along.
