If you’ve been with us long here at the Android Apps Review, you’re likely aware of our particular interest in platforming gams. We have fond memories of playing them on the very early consoles in our youth (Geeze, has it been that long?) and we love any new entry into the genre that emerges on the Android platform.

This is why we are so excited to bring you a review of Microcosm, from morboo, today. The game offers a fun concept, gorgeous graphics, and a price tag that can’t be argued with. If any of that sounds like a good time out, then pony up to the bar and let’s get sipping! Our full review is below.

Concept and Gameplay

If you’re familiar with platforming basics, then you’re likely on board with what Microcosm has to offer. You’ll send one of the four characters around at any given moment, using their special powers to navigate the levels and obtain rewards.

These rewards come in the form of gold coins and blue energy crystals. Collecting as many of these as possible ensures you’ll have a higher score. And for score freaks like us, that’s always a good thing.

The actual locomotion of the game relies on a sort of slingshot method. By pulling back and firing away, you can send your protagonist shooting off in any direction, or jumping upward to overcome an obstacle. This changes slightly from character to character, but for the most part, that’s the basics. More on how it actually functions in a second, for now we will simply assure you that if barely missing a platform and trying over and over again is your thing, you’ll find a lot to love here.

With plenty of levels (though we certainly hope more worlds are added in future updates) and a lot of promise, Microcosm’s is a solid concept.

Graphics and Design

Let us be the first to mention that Microcosm is absolutely gorgeous. The game’s artwork is unrivaled in most Android titles, and you’ll need a pretty powerful device to run it. However, if you’ve got the juice, it’s well worth it.

We liked the character variety, though at the moment, the world quantity is a bit lacking. We’d like to see even more in the future. We’d also like to see refinements to the slingshot-to-live method described earlier. It works well, as is, but at times it often won’t register. This makes the game much more challenging, and we think unintentionally. We assume these issues will be ironed out soon.

Overall Value

Still, Microcosm is very hard to argue with. It’s a gorgeous game that’s a lot of fun to play. Furthermore, it shows promise, and as more content is added and its mechanics are smoothed out, we can only assume that Microcosm will be a shining example of modern platforming on the Android platform.
