If you’ve been with us long here at the Android Apps Review, then you know we have a particular fondness for arcade games that make us think. This is why we’re so dang excited to be bringing you a full review of Lost Keys, from Philip Zelinka, today.

The app combines top-down games of yore with traditional box pushing, and the mix is as refreshing as it can be difficult. It’s a lot of fun, and if you’re looking for a retro-inspired title with a whole lot of (good) headaches, you’ll find our full review of it below! Starting with:

Concept and Gameplay

To understand how Lost Keys works, you’ll need to be familiar with a few retro titles. For instance, the games controls and look remind us a lot of the very early Zelda games. You’ll have a top-down view of your character as he knocks about the levels.

To complete each level, you’ll need to get all of the keys that have been scattered around. In order to accomplish this (at its most basic, anyway) Lost Keys asks that you move around obstacles to get to the items.

In this way, the title is a lot like a traditional box pushing puzzle. It makes you move around the impermeable walls and bricks, while the bricks themselves need to be moved without locking them into corners.

But it also has you dodging spikes, doing things on a timed patrol-type clock, and an assortment of other retro-inspired actions. It’s a lot of fun, and in our not-so-humble opinion, it is exactly what these kinds of block shoving games need. The change is refreshing, and the action is all the better for it!

Graphics and Design

First off, we’d like to say that we absolutely loved the look of the game. The pixelated, blocky graphics work extremely well with the overall package, and we couldn’t be happier with the artwork.

That being said, we’re not such fans of the game’s controls. You see, the protagonist is a little finicky, and a lot hard to control. The directional pad itself is a bit gummy, sort of like driving with lead shoes.

It’s hard to let off the gas when you need to, and the brakes are non-existent. This makes the game quite a bit harder, but at the same time, quite a bit more frustrating. We often ran into spikes we didn’t deserve to hit, or missed a block.

Thankfully, the game gives you an easy re-do button, but this is hardly optimal. We’d like to put the focus back on the difficult puzzles, rather than the difficult controls.

Overall Value

Though, it’s hard to say too much ill about Lost Keys. The game is completely free in the Google Play Store, which is a tremendous perk. Likewise, the gameplay is nothing to sniff at, and is every bit as challenging as it is fun.

In other words, if you’re looking for a new, wholly interactive puzzler to tickle your fancy with, we highly recommend Lost Keys. And with any luck, future updates will sort out the controls post-haste!
