Splashy Fin, from Third i Developement CC, uses cool fun graphics and cute facial animations on the fish to make this fun game look outstanding on your HD display and swim away from the crowd.

Features

Splashy Fin starts up quick and gets right into it. No dilly-dallying around, the yellow fish bobs about and the sea floor moves along until you’re ready to start. Your only two options are “rate” and “play”. Once you press ‘play’ you’ll see the fish bouncing along as you tap the screen and its facial expression will change depending on the situation it’s in, very cool.

This is refreshing for anyone who just wants to get right into it and not have to wasted time with menus, options or settings. Although there are also no game options, such as powerups, alternate characters or different capabilities, to make the game more interesting. What you see is what you get.

The graphics are crisp, clean and colorful and the game itself is very straight forward. All you have to do is either tap the screen to make the fish jump up a bit, or you don’t, which let’s the star of the show drop down.

Be careful though, the vertical space between the reefs is really not much larger than jump the fish makes when you tap the screen. That means that if you tap the screen with the fish anywhere but just above the bottom reef it will hit its head on the upper reef and the game is over.

Splashy Fin Android Game Review

Splashy Fin is definitely a challenging game to play and in my opinion, too challenging. I may not be a master game player but I do play these types of games quite a bit and I could not get past a few reefs, and so for me the game was more frustrating than fun.

That being said there are any number of ways the developers could easily take their great start and improve the playability of the game quite a bit. For example, having the fish eat things along the way to score points, have bad guys coming after you, let the fish get injured when it bumps a reef but not die, have the reefs farther apart until the first checkpoint, or have the fish jump just a little bit when you tap the screen to give the player finer control over how much the fish jumps.

Overall this is a game anyone can pick up and play, the only question is, how long will you play it? On the plus side the developers have a very interesting beginning here: the facial expressions on the fish match the situation it’s in, the background graphics are bright and colorful, and the one control, tapping the screen, is easy to figure out.

Value

The fact that Splahy Fin is free of charge and there are no IAPs is certainly a plus. And of course you may be much better at moving the fish along than I was and so you may enjoy this simple game quite a bit. But honestly, this game would benefit quite a bit from some added features.

Also, according to the developer, an iOS version is in the works.

Overall if you can hang with it and get past some reefs it’s a great way to quickly kill some downtime.
