When it comes to mobile games, there are certain genres that are just a bit . . . worn out. Whether they’re flinging some form of animal at another form of animal, or requiring the player to match like objects to beat levels: We’re tired of certain concepts.
All of that to say we’re absolutely impressed by what 3D Gems, from gambikules, is putting out there. The game is delightfully inventive, drawing upon old ideas to create whole new levels (pardon the pun) of interactivity.
If you’re looking for an expansive take on a traditional arcade game, then you have nowhere better to look than with 3D Gems. And for our full review, just skip on down below the break!
Concept and Gameplay
As you might have guessed, the game itself is a fairly standard jewel matching affair. You slide jewels around to create groups of threes (at the least) and then those sets disappear. In return, you get points and eventual levels unlocked. That being said, the developers have worked hard to bring something new to the table as well.
3D Gems introduces exactly what you might think, judging from the title. It allows players to interact with their matching jewel sets across multiple levels on all fields of vision. You’ll encounter platforms that move up and down, cascading barrels, shifting tiles, and a whole lot more.

It’s great fun, and though you’re largely playing the same kind of game you’ve always done, you’re getting enough fresh air to make it worthwhile. The end result is engaging and entertaining: And really, what else could you ask for?
Each level is unique from the other, and you’ll find a variety of “specials” per set. In this way, we highly doubt you’ll be bored by playing the game the first time through. We also think you’ll come back for seconds.
Design and Graphics
Coming from a long line of beautiful games, 3D Gems is not quite our favorite in the looks department. Though, it is hardly ugly. Instead, it has a look that’s a bit rougher around the edges than we might like, especially when compared to its . . . err, notable jewel matching predecessor.
Still, the game is handsome enough to not detract from its own gameplay. And the levels, 3D or not, are all quite entertaining in their own right. Summing it up, is the sort of game you can play without complaint, though you might not feel compelled to write home about it.
Overall Value
Perhaps best of all, 3D Gems costs only $1.36 in the Google Play Store. That’s quite a bargain, and with the innovations 3D Gems brings, it’s quite the bargain. If you’re itching for a bit of jewel matching fun on the Android platform, then you should add 3D Gems to the list, it will please you immensely. For everyone else, it’s an innovative arcade game with a fair price tag.
