Epic Ball Game: Space Soccer
Android App Review by AndroidAppsReview.com
When it comes to new arcade titles for the Android platform, very rarely do we see any examples of true innovation. It seems a lot of developers these days are content to create copies or approximations of classic titles. That being said, Epic Ball Game: Space Soccer, from AnRaEl, is out in a world of its own.
It bears a lot of resemblance to the first video game ever—Pong. But it hardly sticks to that tried-and-true formula, creating a new experience that’s infinitely more rewarding, and a whole lot more engaging.
For our full review, you need only to slide on down below the break!
Concept and Gameplay
As stated, Epic Ball Game looks like a copy of Pong at first glance, though set in space. You’ll be sending a ball across the level toward a cute alien goalkeeper. That alien will bounce it right back to you, and you go back and forth until someone screws up.
However, this is only a portion of the whole puzzle. For instance, you can create whole blockades for your opponent to work through, kind of like pinball in space. They’ll need to bounce past the limits on each of your blocks before your goal is accessible.
Alternatively, one can also—literally—draw out a path to the opponent’s goal. Any of these assaults can be blocked with a finger, of course. It takes quick thinking and whole lot of determination to make it through all twenty levels, especially with an AI this crafty.
If you tire of playing with your alien friend, you can also play online with other, real opponents. We had a lot of fun with this, and given the complexity that Epic Ball Game is supporting, there’s plenty of room for trickery. It’s a great time out, and easily one of the more inventive titles we’ve seen in a long while.
Design and Interface
It also helps Epic Ball Game’s case that it looks so good. The application is practically sparkling. We loved the animations for our alien opponent (named El) and as mentioned already, his brain is actually pretty quick.
Likewise, we loved the detail in the environments themselves. This is no cheap production, and it’s clear the developers have spent a lot of time perfecting the layout. The controls are simple, the gameplay is tight, and the complexity itself is easy enough to manage—though certainly difficult to master.
Overall Value
All in all, Epic Ball Game is easily one of the best new arcade titles we’ve seen on the Google Play Store. It’s fresh, bold, inventive and a whole lot of fun to play. It’s also free to download, as an added bonus. There is an IAP but that is only to remove ads and extend the online game limits when playing online.
If you’re looking for a new game to waste away the afternoon with, this is your best bet. Epic Ball Game is one of our favorite new games for Android, and it also earns our hearty recommendation.
Epic Ball Game: Space Soccer requires Android 2.3+ and up. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
