Tasker, developed by Crafty Apps EU, is an incredible app for Android devices. Though it’s complexity might make it seem like an impossible app to learn, Tasker is a must-have app for anyone who would like to get more out of their Android device.

Concept and Functionality

Tasker’s goal is to provide users with options to automate routine tasks that occur on your phone or tablet. For example, say you always send your loved one a text when you leave work to let them know you’re on your way home.

With Tasker and an NFC tag, you could have your phone do this automatically when you place your phone on the NFC tag in the car. The same goes for popular apps like Pandora and GPS navigation.

How does this work? Tasker functions using triggers, actions, tasks, and scenes. If you’re familiar with the concept of “if this, then that”, it’s pretty much the same idea.

These triggers include opening a particular app, the time of day, and many others. Actions dictate what Tasker asks your Android device to do, and the app comes with over 200 predefined actions, as well as support for plugins.

I won’t be shy about it; Tasker is complex. So complex, in fact, that it took me about a month after I purchased it to finally sit down and learn my way around the app. It was the best thing I could do for my Nexus 7 tablet, though, because Tasker allowed me to do things I never thought were possible.

The best advice I can give is to not be fearful of rolling up your sleeves and digging into this app. There are plenty of informative tutorials on the net that will help guide you through the process of creating tasks, and once you get the hang of it, it’s incredibly easy to use.

Tasker is bursting at the seams with features. If I could pick one app that demonstrates the core difference between the Android and iOS operating systems, this app would be it. If you can imagine it, it’s likely that Tasker can help you execute it with the app.

Plugin support helps make the experience even better, though, and I’ve noticed that more and more apps are incorporating the use of Tasker into their design.

If you’re the owner of a fairly old Android device, the devs at Tasker still love you. The app has various versions for different flavors of Android, so almost no one is left out in the dust.
