Galaxy War: Star Colony Wars
Android Game Review by AndroidAppsReview.com
Way back in the day, when video games were just hitting their 3D stride, we could be found frequently with some form of star-based exploration title on our screen.
For those that don’t remember the golden era of these games, they typically involved starting at one star, expanding outward to many more, and vanquishing enemies along the way. The action was turn-based, the units pixelated, and the fun totally out of this world.
And all of that has now been moved to our Android phone, thanks to Galaxy War: Star Colony Wars, from KRE Software. The game brings all the same glory to the table, allowing us to live out our star conquering fantasies one turn at a time.
Concept and Gameplay
If you are familiar with the genre, then you’re likely already on-top of how Galaxy War works.
The game has you beginning your empire quest at one end of the Milky Way—after choosing one of the four available races, that is. You’ll then expand to nearby star systems, where you’ll build space stations using resources.
These stations range in price, ability and effectiveness. You can expect a standard sort of crawl up the functionality ladder, here. The higher your level, the better the space stations at your disposal.
Resource space stations give you more wiggle room to work with, while defense stations create defenses. Same goes for research facilities, docks, and so on and so forth.
To maximize your land grab and to totally conquer your slice of the universe, you will need to effectively leverage enemy attacks with the units at your command. Make the most of your resources, and you’ll come away a victor. It’s really quite challenging, and if you’re in the mood for a lot of strategy, you’ll certainly find it here.
To put it another way: This is definitely not Candy Crush.
Design and Graphics
On the one hand, we want to say that Galaxy War is a pretty well-designed application. It has decent graphics (though they are certainly retro-inspired) an easy to navigate interface, and more than enough complexity to make us feel the developers care.
But we just can’t call what’s here “top-shelf.” The fonts aren’t what we might have picked for readability, just as the spacing on some of the buttons isn’t quite where we’d like it. That may sound picky, but examples of this abound: When you add them all up, it just feels a little too brittle for the depth of material provided.
Overall Value
That being said, the game is totally free in the Google Play Store, which is no doubt its biggest boon. To offset this lack of cost, you will have to contend with some pretty big advertisements. Though in our mind, this is a fair trade.
The gameplay provided is sound, the graphics decent, and the complexity above and beyond what we would expect. This creates a lovely game world, and one we would still easily recommend.
Galaxy War requires Android 2.1 and up. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
