Planetary Postage, developed by Growing Tree Studios, is a brand-new Android game that requires players to tactically guide their space ship to delivery platforms.

Growing Tree Studios was founded by Peter Divers, an animator for Peter Jackson’s visual effects company Weta Digital. Peter has worked on many visual effects projects including Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, but it is in gaming and storytelling that his true passion lies.

Concept and Gameplay

If you’re familiar with gravity-based games like Doodle Jump, Planetary Postage feels a bit like that, but only in reverse.

In order to play the game, you must accurately and delicately maneuver a space ship around space debris and junk such as asteroids and satellites.

The ultimate goal of the game is to successfully land on the delivery platform and drop off your package, thus completing the level. Be careful, though, because your ship can easily run out of fuel if you spend too much time navigating to the delivery platform.

There’s a useful tutorial you can read when you first start playing Planetary Postage, but I had a heck of a time just getting through the first level.

The space ship is controlled by tapping or pressing down on the keypad buttons located at the bottom right of the screen. It took me awhile to get used to the layout of the keypad, but it took even longer to figure out how to navigate around astral trash without crashing into it.

In terms of graphics, everything in Planetary Postage is sharp and true to the environment, which is always nice to see. However, my inability to pass the first level within the first 10 minutes of playing the game was a bit ridiculous.

The slightest bump into something makes you explode, and even landing too hard on the delivery platform will cause the game to end. I’ve even watched the parcel ever so gracefully fall off of the platform into oblivion.

Features

Planetary Postage features tons of engaging gameplay across many levels , and you’ll likely be occupied for quite a bit of time. I do like the fact that the game includes a handy level selection menu on the main screen, as well as the option to resume your current game in case you had to put it on hold.

Other than levels and great graphics, Planetary Postage lacks a bit in the way of features. This is both good and bad, but I thought of a few improvements which might make the game even more exciting. I’d love to see something along the lines of a separate timed mode or incorporating time into the game as a way to add scores.

Value

Planetary Postage is available to download from Google Play for $0.99, and I definitely feel like it’s worth the price for what the game delivers. However, it’s a bit too difficult to start with for my preference, but if you’re up for a challenge and you don’t give up easily, Planetary Postage is definitely worth a try.
