If you’ve ever had the urge to venture far into the galaxy’s black abyss, or just like a game where war is a way of life and exploration is never ending, you’ll love The Infinite Black Android app.

Consider yourself warned: this game is not for the faint of heart, as you’ll find out in my Android app review of The Infinite Black.

Gameplay

The Infinite Black

At first glance, The Infinite Black Android app doesn’t look like much. You start out at Earth, and then jump to the nearest coordinate. It’s a basic grid of jump spots, with varied pathways and scattered space stations, planets, farmable asteroids and lots of beautiful, star-filled sky.

Before you know it you’ve jumped quite far from Earth, and are facing aliens, pirates and the occasional gigantic conglomeration trying to recruit you to their ways. I didn’t expect to get so sucked in to The Infinite Black, but that’s space for you.

I will admit it. I got completely hooked on this game. It’s simple, interesting and fun. Currently joining corps, harvesting and trading goods, building planets and upgrading your ship are the only real in-game functions. Aside from beating up aliens to rob them and battling with the big boys in PVP zones.

There’s a mission function that developers haven’t released yet that will probably make this game even better, and a crafting function that should make it more interesting.

It’s worth mentioning that even though this app is relatively new, there are a lot of people with big ships out there. I was pretty disgusted by the beat up the noobs mentality of the game community. If you can keep clear of the drama then this game is going to be a lot of fun.

Functionality

The Infinite Black

The Infinite Black Android app is currently in beta testing, and boy is it obvious. I was more annoyed by the constant updates (nearly daily) and server maintenance sessions that interrupt the game perpetually than I was by the occasional in app glitch.

That’s beta for you, I suppose. This app already has over 10,000 downloads in just a few weeks. I foresee big things in The Infinite Black’s future.

User Interface

One of the side effects of a perpetually updating app is the constant changes in UI. It seems like the developers at Whalesong Games can’t seem to make up their minds about where to place the menus of this app.

Here’s a hint guys: don’t put them at the bottom of the screen, and do keep them semitransparent and small. There are a ton of items that can pop up on the screen, depending on where you are and what’s going on. Keep it simple, streamlined and, for the love of all that is holy, create a feature that lets you know if you’re being attacked even if you are on another screen.

Value

Despite the trials of loving a game that’s in beta test, I still love The Infinite Black. On top of all the awesomeness, this app is truly free, with no ads and no hidden agenda. There is an in app purchase system for game currency, but you never have to spend money to enjoy this app. That’s priceless.

  1. This game is crazy fun!

  2. Hello from Whalesong Games (maker of The Infinite Black)!

Thanks for giving us a fair and honest review. As was mentioned, the game is still in beta testing, but we make regular updates every few days to constantly improve it. All mechanics, UI changes, and development work is based entirely on comments and suggestions made by the players.

We released a new patch yesterday that streamlined a lot of UI functionality and hopefully improved the overall experience, and there’s more planned for the future.

  3. Game is very fun. Only one complaint and that is when buying ships shot rate slows as damage increases making it kinda irrelevant. Other than that best game I have found. The upgrading ships flaw is one that needs fixed fast though
