Building a beautiful zoo just takes a few taps in Pocket Gem’s Android app Tap Zoo. This lovely little app was recently converted from that other OS to Android, and it’s about time.
If you are an animal lover, or if you have an animal lover in your family looking for a new app, pay close attention to my Android app review of Tap Zoo.
Gameplay
Tap Zoo
The Tap Zoo Android app lets you build, manage and fill your very own zoo right on your Android. In this app you’ll create an animal specific enclosure, add animals to create a family and breed exotic species of zoo animals right in your own nursery. Even landscape, decorate and adorn your animal playground to attract visitors.
Tap Zoo combines elements of builder apps in a playful way. This app is definitely a kid magnet. Fun sound effects and animal animations give it a little something extra. You can even visit neighbors to get ideas for your zoo.
This app could be vastly improved by more animal interactions and scenes. The game also needs a major fast forward button. It can take ages to collect enough coins to do anything, and hatching is painfully slow.
It’s also pretty expensive to play, unless you have the patience of a saint. But more about that later.
It’s worth noting that the iPhone version of this app is much more intricate. On Android the gameplay is not revolutionary, but it sure is cute.
User Interface
Tap Zoo
The name says it all. The Tap Zoo Android app is extremely easy to use, all you’ve got to do is tap.
Fun graphics and a clear zoo theme punch up the excitement. There is one main menu which you can access by tapping the arrow in the lower right-hand corner of the screen, or by using your Android’s menu button. I appreciate the cross functionality.
There are also app progress indicators, a volume toggle switch and a button to access in-app credit purchases at the top of the screen.
All in all, the Tap Zoo Android app is simply and beautifully laid out. Android users of all ages will have no trouble with this app.
Functionality
Tap Zoo also functions like a dream. I installed and ran the app, progressed through each screen several times and even gave my back button a work out. The app never had a hiccup.
If you read through some Android Market reviews there are a couple user complaints of force close errors and trouble accessing the play board. I did not experience these, but it’s worth mentioning that the Tap Zoo Android app might not work perfectly on all Android phones.
Value
Getting down to brass tacks, Tap Zoo is free to download in the Android Market. However, playing the game with any amount of efficiency (or at all really) is gonna cost you.
Even the smallest starter pack of credits costs $1.99. It’s also super easy to make purchases in app. Two taps puts you in the market ready to drop some dough. If you hand this app to a child, turn off in app purchasing. Or give them something else to play.
