Who doesn’t love a great game of tic-tac-toe? The game itself is old (possibly dating back as far as Ancient Egypt), but it’s still one of the most popular games to play today. Thanks to technology and the imagination, there are countless twists on this timeless game of skill.

Tico, developed by AVP Games, is a fun new Android game that puts a new spin on traditional tic-tac-toe and is perfect for anyone who enjoys a challenge.

Tico is unique in the sense that it uses the rule of the oldest known form of the game, which is that players have a limited number of pieces to place on the grid. If you thought you knew tic-tac-toe before, you’re in for a very pleasant surprise.

Tico allows players to create games with grids that are 3×3 or 5×5. The object of the game is still similar, being that you need to create a line of Xs or Os in order to win. However, players can also win by creating a square in a 5×5 game.

Each player gets three pieces in a 3×3 game and four pieces in a 5×5 game. Once you’ve placed all of your pieces on the board, you need to move them around as the game continues.

Seems easy, right? Wrong! The added twist of having a limited number of Xs and Os means there’s a whole new strategy to the game. Tico has effectively taken the easy game of tic-tac-toe and turned it into a game of chess, where every move must be carefully studied to ensure victory.

Features

One of my favorite features Tico has to offer is multiplayer capabilities. Instead of this being an online multiplayer game, you still have to go old-school and play with a person who’s physically present. This is wonderful, though, because it makes Tico a great game to play with a friend when you’re looking for something to do.

If multiplayer isn’t what you’re looking for, you’ll be really happy to know that Tico includes an extremely sophisticated AI to play against. You can set AI difficulty to either easy or normal, and I’ll warn you by saying easy mode is deceptive. It took me at least five games before I finally won a game against the AI, so believe me when I say that Tico is not something to take lightly.

It’s definitely challenging, but not impossible.

Value

Tico is available to download from the Google Play store for free, which is always a great price. You won’t be pestered by fullscreen ads or bombarded with in-app purchases for boosts. Those who are looking for a genuinely challenging game that’s great to play with friends or by yourself should definitely give Tico a try!
