I’m happy to say that it seems like the mobile app industry is seeing an increase in games that tip their hat to the classic arcade games of days gone by. Developed by JK Studio, Retro Cube is an entertaining and challenging game for Android devices. Featuring spacey neon colors and a classic arcade feel, this puzzle game is great for anyone who is looking for a bit of a throwback.

Concept and Gameplay

The idea of Retro Cube is to use left and right arrows (found at the bottom right of the game screen) to move your cube. The up arrow, located at the bottom right, is used to make your cube jump.

The goal of the game is to successfully guide your cube through 30 different levels, each filled with obstacles that you must navigate your cube around

Retro Cube includes a somber reminder of how challenging it can be, and this reminder comes in the form of a death counter at the top of the game screen. I wouldn’t let it get to you too much, though, as there isn’t a limit to how many times you can try to complete a level.

Retro Cube Android Game Review

In terms of gameplay, Retro Cube is challenging enough to push you, but not impossible enough to make you quit. It seems like the game has a healthy balance of difficulty, meaning players are less likely to get frustrated with the game.

Personally I love the simplicity of Retro Cube, as it really does feel like an old-school arcade game.

Features

Unfortunately I found that Retro Cube lacks a few basic features which would likely make it a better game. I’m not a huge fan of how the level process works, so I’d love to see a level menu that included all 30 stages for players to pick from.

Including scores somehow might also be helpful, as many Android gamers like to challenge themselves by improving on previous scores. The game’s Google Play description says that you can compete against friends and family, but I couldn’t locate anything that allows users to sign into Google Play Games.

This is an unfortunate omission because I think such a service would be perfect for Retro Cube since it would allow for achievements as well as score tracking and even global leaderboards. My guess is we’ll see this in a future release.

Value

Retro Cube is available to download from Google Play for $1.08, but there’s also a lite version available to download for free. Overall, it’s a solid puzzle game that has quite a bit of potential and will provide challenging retro entertainment for players.
