Keeping up with the latest news can be troublesome, especially when interesting events don’t necessarily make the headlines. That’s why reading articles from multiple sources can be beneficial and informative.
Curated News is a cleverly designed news aggregator that breaks the cycle of news bias and echo chambers to bring you articles that together tell the whole story.
Concept and Functionality
Personally I’m a news junkie and I enjoy apps that allow me to gather information from a wide variety of high quality sources. Not only does this help with preventing any sort of bias, but it means I have a greater chance of finding articles I would otherwise miss.
Curated News, by Matthew Benchimol , consists of a proprietary variety of news sources. As far as ease of use, I found that the app is very well designed to make it as easy as possible to navigate and find articles you want and then also makes it easy to read them because they open in a browser within the app.
I really like the variety of news topics you can browse in Curated News. You can read about tech, medicine, finance, and even podcasts.
Features
Curated News allows you to bookmark articles so you never lose track of the headlines that really interest you. This is a great way to save articles to read later. If you amass too many bookmarks you can shred them with the touch of a button.
Rather than rely on machine learning algorithms that feed you stories to bolster your predispositions, regardless of what’s really happening in the world, Curated News has implemented techniques that insure you’re seeing news that matters.
First it utilizes crowd sourcing to help eliminate the effects of news manipulators. But beyond that it also uses randomization to make sure you’re seeing article that you might not expect.
This “surprise” effect of their randomness methodology provides an important buffer between the news you read and the efforts to manipulate what you see. It is one of the key ways that Curated News stands out from the crowd.
Another feature of Curated News is something you might not necessarily think about. That is the emphasis they place on your privacy. To say this is a breath of fresh air is an understatement. All you have to do is read about the war happening between Apple and Facebook over privacy labels to know how important this is.
It can get pretty technical pretty quickly but I’ll sum it up using the developer’s own words “Curated News prevents cross site scripting attacks by disabling java script, prevents cross site tracking by disabling cookies, sandboxes the app ecosystem from other apps on your phone, requests no permissions (with the exception of the internet), and disallows all clear text web traffic.”

Overall, I definitely think Curated News is well worth the price if you’re interested in an unbiased news app that is focused on delivering headlines you might miss elsewhere and maintaining your privacy. A great combination.
