If You’re On T-Mobile’s Network You May Be SOL Next Month
Posted by AndroidAppsReview.com
Thanks to the good folks at Android Police we’ve been alerted to a situation that can have dire effects on many Android users if they are on the T-Mobile network.
While the salve is that these are ‘old’ devices, most from 2014-2015, in the Android world that’s exactly why they shouldn’t be doing it. Those are the devices that folks have because 1. they can’t afford a new/er one, especially this year, or 2. it’s the only one they can afford to buy for their kid/wife/self/whoever.
There are 19 devices on the chopping block and you own one of them this is important for you. They say that T-Mobile will be contacting affected subscribers but c’mon, how many of us always read the emails or sms texts we get from our cell company?
What they should do is hire that babe from the AT&T commercials and send her door to door to let everyone know about it. Then after she breaks that bad news she can give you that sickly smile she does.
Now where was I? Oh yeah, ranting about what bs this is. The 19 phones in question will no longer work on the T-Mobile network after Jan 29th, 2021.
Anyway folks, here’s the meat of the matter, the phones that are heading to the guillotine:
- Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (AT&T model)
- Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (Verizon model)
- Samsung Galaxy Note Edge
- HTC Desire 10 Lifestyle
- HTC Desire 650
- Google Nexus 9
- Huawei Mate 8
- Huawei P9
- Mikrotikls SIA_R11e-LTE6
- Netgear Arlo Security Camera System
- OnePlus 1
- Quanta Dragon IR7
- Samsung Galaxy S5 Duos
- Sony Xperia Z3 Compact
- Sony Xperia Z3
- Sony Xperia Z3 Orion
- Sony D6616 Xperia Z3 Orion
- Soyea M02
- ZTE ZMax
I’m especially pissed since I bought an Xperia Z3 for all its goodness and I love that phone! Oh well, you can’t fight city hall or a giant cell service provider.
Keep in mind though that these phones can still be used for apps and as gaming devices by running offline or connecting via wifi. So, if you want to still use it you can, you just can’t get cell service. And if you find that you can make good use of one of these devices after Jan 29th the good news is that you should be able to pick one up on eBay pretty cheap. VoIP anyone?
Well, I do feel better now, thanks for letting me let off some steam. And if your interested, you can get more detailed info head over to Android Police.
A Final Word
I love the Android ecosystem, the dev platform, the plethora of device options and all the rest. I started out with a Palm Pilot, moved to the Treo when it became available and on that little square screen saw the enormous potential of having a web browser in your pocket. I confess that I did have an iPhone early on but its closed overly controlled environment turned me off so I moved to Android and never looked back. All that said, this sucks and makes we wonder where we go from here. Thoughts?
