When it comes to gaming genres, things are usually quite clearcut, especially in the match-3 game category. You either like it or you don’t. What style of gamer are you?

You might be into arcade games, RPGs, top-downs, racing games, endless runners and on-and-on.

No matter, Fishdom, from Playrix, takes one of the all-time most popular genres of Android gaming and turns it up to eleven.

The end result is a twist on match-3 games that is quite creative and lots of fun for players.

Fishdom will hook you no matter what game style you like best. It’s a fun, challenging and engaging game with enough variety to keep you playing match-3 and mini-games hour after hour.

Concept and Functionality

Fishdom actually accomplishes several gaming things in one package: Of course it’s a well designed match-3 game that goes toe-to-toe with Candy Crush Saga but it doesn’t stop there. How does it do this? By offering a variety of mini games within the main match-3 game to test additional skills.

To start with there’s a ton of content here, including hundreds of more traditional match 3 levels.

You can design and decorate your own aquarium, compete with other players, and interact with a bunch of talking 3D fish that will each respond to you according to their own unique personality. Pretty cool.

It’s an odd mixture, and at times, it feels like we’re playing a matching game with some other stuff tacked on. But the skills go a long way toward smoothing things out, and forming a bridge between all the elements.

Still, you’ll often feel like your matching efforts are more important than the rest. This isn’t necessarily bad, however, as the gameplay itself is great.

Design and Graphics

It also helps that Fishdom looks as good as it does. It’s clear that the game is a polished effort, and one the developers wanted to be proud of.

What you find within the app is a wealth of cool aquarium artwork, many various characters, lots of exciting match-3 levels, and the standard amount of fun one expects from matching titles.

Overall, this blends quite well. The fact that Fishdom is so highly-developed also adds a bit of necessary tack to the total concept. To phrase it another way, you certainly won’t notice the trees for the forest—and that’s a great thing.

Overall Value

Finally, Fishdom is completely free in the Google Play Store and you don’t even need an internet connection to play it (did someone say great travel game?). That’s a great reason to jump on what it has to offer, especially if you’re a fan of either match-3 games or really any other fun pick-up-and-play games.

At times Fishdom may be a bit jagged around the edges, but it’s still innovative and exciting. And with no price tag associated, you have nothing to lose.

Fishdom requires Android 4.4+ and up.
